Movie Review: A Scanner Darkly
Wednesday, July 19, 2006, 08:17 PM - Review

This is science fiction? A Scanner Darkly reminded me of independent art house movies like Fargo, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, et. al. The animated look made the movie better, and the acting was decent (yes, Keanu Reeves acted decently), but you need to see this movie more than once to understand the storyline.

Movie Review: Ultimate Avengers: The Movie
Monday, July 17, 2006, 08:05 PM - Review

Ultimate Avengers: The Movie is a decent background story to the Ultimate comic book version of The Avengers. It doesn't have the animation of Batman: The Animated Series or Superman, but it beats He-Man or ThunderCats, and equals G.I. Joe: The Movie. Voice-overs are decent, the storyline works and the action sequences are very good.

Movie Review: Superman Returns
Friday, July 14, 2006, 08:03 PM - Review

You already believe a man can fly ... and become human ... but you haven't seen him disappear.

Superman Returns shows all that and more. It's an amazing sequel to the first two Superman movies (yes, I know there are more than two movies, but the other 2 don't count), especially Brandon Routh who has an uncanny resemblance to Christopher Reeve, both in acting and voice.

As usual for this year's blockbuster movies, the special effects are amazing (you can't tell the cgi from the actual reality!), and unlike another movies this year, the plot and acting are pretty good, too.

Overall: 4.5 of 5

TV Review: Blade: The Series

Blade: The Series is cliche riden and low-budget with lots of action, decent plots, but sub-par acting.

Only watch if you're a Blade fan.

Movie Review: District B13
Saturday, July 1, 2006, 11:24 AM - Review
So, Like, there's this really cool fad called Parkour (a.k.a free running), right? And like this trailer for this French movie called District 13 (Banlieue 13) is like all jumping and martial arts, right? And, like, even though it's in French and has sub-titles, it still better than most of the American action movies released this summer!

Jackie Chan would like this movie, as it's the style of stunts he does.

Review: X-Men: The Last Stand
Saturday, May 27, 2006, 06:32 PM - Review
They say the third time is the charm ... Boy, were they ever wrong, based on the third X-Men movie, X-Men: The Last Stand.

Pretty good action sequences (other than jerky jumping and flying stunts), special effects that mesh perfectly with the live props, and a decent storyline, unfortunately, don't offset the lack of emotion and lackluster directing/editing.

Worth it for X-Man and comic book fans. For everyone else, wait for the DVD and rent it.

At least they won't be making a 4th movie. Hopefully ...

Movie Review: Poseidon
Saturday, May 13, 2006, 06:14 PM - Review
Oh the humanity! (ok, it's an old cliche :)

No, I'm not talking about the story - I'm talking about the Poseidon movie itself!

Like the other blockbuster movies this year so far, the action sequences and special effects are amazing (especially the opening title sequence (Yes, for those who have watched the movie, that whole "around the ship" sequence is computer generated!)). But the acting and plot are easily forgotten. Had they spent 1/10th of the CGI budget on the script and actors, the movie would have been better.

Overall: 2 of 5 (split between action and CGI)

Movie review: Mission: Impossible 3
Friday, May 12, 2006, 08:23 PM - Review
Yet another Tom Cruise movie. Mission: Impossible 3 has lots of action and special effects and Cruise. It also has lots of lame acting and silly dialogue. And definately no plot.

And Katie Holmes, though she's not listed in the credits. What? That's not Katie Holmes? Sure looks like her ...

Overall: 2.5 of 5 (2 for the action sequences)

Show Review: The Lord of the Rings
Saturday, May 6, 2006, 11:35 AM - Review

A spectacle it is, indeed.

The Lord of the Rings "musical" puts the 3 movies on stage with music and dance. Think of it as the real-life Cliffs Notes version of The Lord of the Rings.

The moving stage (I can see a lot of theatres using similar stages in the future), lights and surroundings set the emotional mode, but the rest of show wasn't the spectacle the hype makes it to be.

Barring a few technical glitches (lights and flames not working, audio too loud, music obscuring audio), Lord of the Rings fans and lovers of musical theatre shows will like this show; everyone else should save their money and see the movies instead.

Ps: Don't get the seats by the edge of the balcony seating as there is a railing there that will block your view.

Overall: 3 of 5.
